Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag’s losing streak continued after he managed his former club in a testimonial match.

Ten Hag has had a challenging start to the 2024/25 season, with Manchester United losing three of their first four official matches, including consecutive defeats to Brighton and Liverpool before the current international break. Despite the expectation of a more restful period during the break from club football, Ten Hag has added another loss to his record with a defeat during a testimonial at Utrecht.

The Dutch club organized a testimonial match for recently retired club legend Mark van der Maarel, who ended his 15-year career at Galgenwaard Stadium. The game featured a team of current players versus an XI of former stars, with Ten Hag managing the latter. His team lost 2-1, with Van der Maarel scoring the only goal for his side. Ten Hag will hope to end his streak of consecutive losses when Manchester United face Southampton in the Premier League on Saturday, September 14.

Erik ten Hag’s start to the 2024/25 season has indeed been tough, with Manchester United suffering a rough patch, losing three of their first four official matches. The recent losses to Brighton and Liverpool have added pressure on Ten Hag, especially with fans and critics expecting a stronger start to the season.

Even during the international break, Ten Hag couldn’t catch a break from the losing streak. He participated in a testimonial match for Utrecht’s club legend, Mark van der Maarel, who recently retired after a 15-year career at Galgenwaard Stadium. The match, meant to be a light-hearted celebration, saw Ten Hag managing a team of former Utrecht stars against current players. Unfortunately, his side lost 2-1, with Van der Maarel himself scoring the lone goal for Ten Hag’s team.

As Manchester United prepare to face Southampton on Saturday, September 14, Ten Hag will be keen to break his current run of losses and get his team back on track in the Premier League. A victory against Southampton could provide a much-needed morale boost for both the manager and his players, who are under mounting pressure to deliver results.
