Jamie Carragher has shared his thoughts on Manchester United’s prospects under their new manager, Ruben Amorim. He speculates about the club’s potential final league position, offering insights into how Amorim’s appointment could influence the team’s performance for the remainder of the season.

Heading into the 2024-25 Premier League season, Jamie Carragher initially predicted that Manchester United would secure a fifth-place finish by the end of the campaign. However, with the season well underway, he has reassessed his expectations and taken a more critical stance on the Red Devils’ prospects.

Currently sitting 12th in the league table after 12 matches, Manchester United finds themselves six points adrift of the coveted top-four spots. The arrival of Ruben Amorim as head coach has brought hope of a resurgence, but Carragher remains unconvinced about their chances of a strong finish. Speaking on Sky Sports, the former Liverpool defender admitted to rethinking his earlier forecast. “Placing Manchester United in fifth was a significant error in my predictions,” Carragher confessed. “I don’t believe they have any chance of finishing fifth. In fact, I’d be surprised if they even secure a place in the top-six.”

Carragher argued that the teams currently occupying the top-four positions are in better form and far more consistent than United, making it unlikely for the Red Devils to overtake them in the standings. However, he did concede that a top-six finish remains possible if Amorim can reinvigorate his squad. The recent 3-2 victory over Bodo/Glimt in the Europa League offered a glimpse of what the Portuguese manager might achieve, but significant challenges lie ahead. Transforming this underperforming group of players into a cohesive unit capable of competing at the highest level will demand considerable effort.

To mount a genuine challenge for major silverware in the future, United may require a partial squad overhaul, something that cannot be accomplished in just two transfer windows. Last season, the club finished eighth, a far cry from their third-place success in 2022-23. While Amorim hasn’t yet had enough time to fully implement his tactical philosophy, he remains optimistic that the team can make progress and potentially finish in the top-six. For now, the focus will be on improving performances and delivering consistent results as the campaign unfolds.
