In a thrilling match on Wednesday, Liverpool secured a convincing 4-1 victory over Chelsea, leaving Mauricio Pochettino to reflect on both the referee’s decisions and his team’s lackluster performance. The match had its share of controversial moments, with Chelsea being awarded two penalties that went unfulfilled.

The first half proved disastrous for Chelsea, compounded by Ben Chilwell being rightfully penalized for diving before halftime. However, the decision not to penalize Virgil van Dijk for a challenge on Conor Gallagher earlier in the game raised eyebrows. VAR examined the incident and determined that Van Dijk’s knee made contact just outside the six-yard area. Joe Cole, the former Chelsea and Liverpool player, criticized the decision, emphasizing the need for a brave referee in front of the Kop.

The Reds capitalized on Chelsea’s struggles, with Diogo Jota scoring the opening goal and Connor Bradley extending the lead to 2-0. Despite a potential penalty situation involving Jota and Benoit Badiashile, the referee, Paul Tierney, gave Liverpool the benefit of the doubt. Rio Ferdinand acknowledged the VAR influence but pointed out Chelsea’s overall sluggishness and carelessness.

Darwin Nunez had several opportunities to seal the game for Liverpool, but he missed his chances, hitting the post four times. The situation worsened for Pochettino in the second half when Dominik Szoboszlai scored a header, securing Liverpool’s victory.

Christopher Nkunku managed to score a consolation goal for Chelsea, briefly raising hopes of narrowing the deficit. However, a potential penalty situation involving Nkunku and Van Dijk was controversially dismissed, leading to Pochettino expressing his frustration on the bench.

Despite the contentious decisions, Ally McCoist argued that Liverpool deserved the win, acknowledging the unfavorable set of cards dealt to Chelsea by the officials. This defeat leaves Pochettino’s team stranded in the middle of the table, jeopardizing their chances of finishing the week in seventh place. Additionally, Chelsea’s poor away form continued, with six losses in their last seven away games, potentially pushing them into the bottom half of the table.
