Andrea Berta breaks transfer ‘deadlock’ and agrees huge fee for Arsenal target

Viktor Gyokeres is on the verge of signing with Arsenal following significant progress in negotiations with Sporting Lisbon.
The Swedish striker made it clear he preferred a move to north London, turning down interest from Manchester United and a potential reunion with Sporting boss Ruben Amorim. Despite Juventus showing interest as well, Gyokeres remained focused solely on joining Arsenal, who are actively seeking a new striker this transfer window.
Sporting Lisbon had concerns that Gyokeres might go as far as refusing to train to force a move to Arsenal. Talks over a transfer fee had stalled the deal, but according to CNN Portugal, an agreement has now been reached.
A team led by Arsenal representative Berta traveled to Lisbon on Friday and finalized a deal that includes an initial €65 million fee. The total package could rise by another €15 million based on performance-related bonuses.
Gyokeres has reportedly already agreed to a five-year contract, and Arsenal could officially announce the signing as early as next week.
Initially, Arsenal had prioritized RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko, but the German side refused to sell for anything less than €90 million. As a result, Arsenal shifted their attention to Gyokeres.
Gyokeres is seen as a versatile forward. He’s powerful like a bulldozer, quick on the turn, and always seems to find himself in dangerous positions. Unlike more hesitant strikers, he tends to take shots without overthinking. Standing at 6’2”, he still has room to grow in the air but is already adept at using his chest to control aerial balls. While not the most aggressive in the air, he effectively uses his body to hold off defenders and bring teammates into play.
He’s not the type of forward who drops deep like Roberto Firmino, and Arsenal may need to adapt their tactics slightly to get the best out of him, according to European football analyst Zach Lowy.
Zubimendi Joins Arsenal from Real Sociedad
In addition to Gyokeres, Arsenal have secured the signing of midfielder Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad. The 26-year-old Spain international joins the Gunners on a long-term contract after the club activated his £51 million release clause.
Zubimendi, who recently won Euro 2024, had previously been targeted by Liverpool and was also linked with Real Madrid.
Speaking to Arsenal’s website, Zubimendi said, “This is a major step in my career. Arsenal was the move I was hoping for. The moment you arrive here, you feel how big the club is.”
He added, “Their playing style suits me well, and I believe their recent performances show the best is yet to come.”
Manager Mikel Arteta expressed his excitement about the signing: “Martin brings exceptional quality and football intelligence. He fits perfectly with our team and has everything needed to be a key player. We’re thrilled to welcome Martin and his family.”
