Andy Murray Reflects on Impulsive Ferrari Purchase After Brief Split from Kim: “It Wasn’t Really Me”

During a recent appearance on his “Centre Stage” tour in July 2025, retired tennis champion Andy Murray shared a surprising story from his past – how a temporary breakup with now-wife Kim Sears in 2008 led him to make an uncharacteristically extravagant purchase: a Ferrari he named “Barry.”

The three-time Grand Slam winner, known for his practical nature, admitted the flashy sports car didn’t suit him. “I thought it was cool,” Murray told the audience at New Wimbledon Theatre, “but I got rid of it after a couple months because it wasn’t really me.” His first drive ended with being pulled over by police when the insurance hadn’t cleared yet.

Murray and Sears, who met at a 2005 US Open party when both were 18, briefly separated in 2008. The tennis star revealed the split “shook” him, leading to the impulsive buy. They reconciled within six months, with Kim even “winning custody” of their dog Maggie during the breakup.

The couple married in 2015 at Scotland’s Cromlix House Hotel, which they now own, and have four children together. Murray credits Kim’s steady support through his career highs – including his 2013 and 2016 Wimbledon wins – and lows, like his painful hip injury struggles beginning in 2017.

Now retired after the 2024 Paris Olympics, Murray is enjoying family life and new pursuits like coaching and golf. The Ferrari story offers a rare glimpse of vulnerability from the typically stoic Scot, showing how even champions can make questionable decisions when heartbroken – and how the right partner can help ground them again.

Murray’s self-awareness about the short-lived purchase reflects the same authenticity that defined his tennis career. As he told the audience, some things – like a strong marriage – prove more valuable than any luxury car.
