Manchester United supporters could be approaching another major moment in the club’s ownership saga after fresh speculation surrounding the Glazer family’s willingness to sell its remaining shares.
After years of protests, anger and demands for a complete ownership change, reports that members of the Glazer family have considered selling some or all of their holdings have reignited hopes of a new beginning at Old Trafford.
The biggest question is whether the family is finally prepared to walk away completely.
A statement circulating online claims that the Glazers have decided to put every remaining share up for sale following negotiations with a serious investor.
The alleged statement reads:
“After constant threats and protests from the fans both inside and outside the club, we have decided to put all our shares out for sale.
“We tried everything to keep this club running. We bought expensive players, we sold a stake to INEOS just to help the club move forward, but it’s not working.
“After lengthy negotiations with a serious investor, we have decided to sell to them.
“We believe they are the right people to lead Manchester United back to glory.”
If genuine, such an announcement would represent one of the biggest developments in Manchester United’s modern history.
However, the statement has not been authenticated, and there is no confirmed announcement that the Glazers have agreed to sell all their remaining shares.
WHY THE GLAZERS ARE UNDER PRESSURE
The Glazer family’s relationship with Manchester United supporters has been difficult for years.
Their leveraged takeover in 2005 left the club carrying significant debt and created widespread resentment among supporters.
Over the years, fans have repeatedly protested against the ownership, demanding investment, better leadership and a complete change at the top.
The frustration has not been limited to football results.
Supporters have also raised concerns about Old Trafford’s condition, the club’s infrastructure, recruitment decisions and the financial direction of the institution.
Even when United have enjoyed successful periods on the pitch, the ownership controversy has remained.
For many supporters, the arrival of a completely new owner would represent an opportunity to start again.
INEOS CHANGED THE OWNERSHIP STRUCTURE, BUT THE GLAZERS REMAIN
In 2024, Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS completed an investment agreement that gave them responsibility for Manchester United’s football operations.
However, the agreement did not represent a complete takeover.
The Glazer family retained majority voting control, while INEOS became a major minority shareholder.
According to Manchester United’s 2026 annual filing, the Glazer family still controlled approximately 67.9 per cent of the club’s voting power, while INEOS held approximately 28.95 per cent.
That means the Glazers have continued to exercise significant influence over the club despite Ratcliffe’s involvement.
A complete sale would therefore require a much bigger ownership transition than the arrangement supporters witnessed in 2024.
REPORTS OF A POSSIBLE GLAZER SHARE SALE
The possibility of another ownership change is not entirely without background.
In June 2026, Reuters reported that some members of the Glazer family were considering selling part or all of their Manchester United holdings.
The report suggested that discussions had taken place among family members about potentially pursuing a sale.
However, considering a sale is very different from agreeing to sell the entire family stake to a particular investor.
No confirmed full-sale agreement was announced in that report.
That distinction is important because supporters should not mistake renewed takeover speculation for an official departure announcement.
WHO COULD BECOME MANCHESTER UNITED’S NEXT OWNER?
If the Glazers eventually decide to sell their remaining holdings, the identity of the buyer would become the biggest question.
Manchester United is one of the most commercially powerful football institutions in the world.
Any serious takeover would require enormous financial resources, detailed negotiations and approval through the relevant regulatory processes.
Potential investors would also need to demonstrate how they intend to improve the club.
United need more than a wealthy owner.
They need investment in the stadium, improved recruitment, a clear footballing structure and a long-term plan capable of restoring the club to the top of European football.
Supporters will want assurances that a new ownership group understands the responsibility that comes with controlling such an historic institution.
WHAT WOULD A COMPLETE SALE MEAN FOR MANCHESTER UNITED?
A full departure by the Glazers would be an enormous moment for supporters who have spent years campaigning for change.
It could open the door to a new boardroom structure, different investment priorities and a fresh relationship between the club and its supporters.
Old Trafford’s redevelopment could become a major priority.
The club could also reassess its long-term recruitment strategy and how resources are allocated between the first team, academy and infrastructure.
But a change of ownership would not automatically guarantee success.
Manchester United would still need experienced football executives, intelligent recruitment and stability in the dugout.
The next owners would have to prove that their ambitions extend beyond making headlines.
UNITED FANS ARE WAITING FOR ONE ANNOUNCEMENT
For now, the Glazer ownership story remains unfinished.
The reports that some family members have considered selling their holdings have given supporters another reason to believe that a change could eventually happen.
But until an official announcement or formal sale agreement emerges, claims that every Glazer share has been placed on the market should be treated with caution.
One thing is clear: Manchester United supporters want an ownership structure that puts the club’s long-term future first.
After nearly two decades of frustration, many believe the time has come for a completely new chapter at Old Trafford.
