Arsenal is interested in signing Viktor Gyokeres, a striker from Sporting Lisbon, for about £60 million during this summer’s transfer window, as reported by The Sun.

Sporting Lisbon, however, doesn’t want to sell the 26-year-old cheaply and is insisting on his £85 million release clause.

Gyokeres had an exceptional 2023-24 season, scoring 43 goals and providing 15 assists in 50 games, helping Sporting win the Primeira Liga. He was also the league’s top scorer with 29 goals.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta thinks Gyokeres would be a great addition to their attack as they prepare for another title challenge.

Initially, Arsenal wanted RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko and were ready to pay his £55 million release clause. But Sesko extended his contract with Leipzig, forcing Arsenal to consider other options.

Over the past year, Arsenal has closely monitored Gyokeres, believing he could strengthen their forward line. However, Sporting’s £85 million asking price is a major hurdle, and Arsenal seems reluctant to spend that much on Gyokeres, who used to play for Coventry City.

Sporting Lisbon aims to raise funds this summer but prefers to do so by selling other players, like defenders Ousmane Diomande and Goncalo Inacio, who have been linked to Arsenal. Diomande is valued at around £50 million, and Inacio has a £52 million release clause. Despite this, Arsenal’s main focus is on signing a new attacker, hoping Sporting will lower their demands for Gyokeres.
