Arsenal has received a significant boost in their quest to sign Viktor Gyokeres. The 26-year-old striker has been a top target for the club this summer as manager Mikel Arteta aims to strengthen the team’s attack.
Gyokeres, whose contract with Sporting CP runs until June 2028, had an outstanding season in the Portuguese league. He played 33 games, scored 29 goals, and provided nine assists, helping Sporting CP win the Primeira Liga title. His remarkable performance caught the attention of many, including Arsenal, who have been closely monitoring him since March.
Although Arsenal is keen on signing Gyokeres, his high release clause of €100m (£84m) might be a challenge. However, there’s good news for Arsenal. Sporting CP recently made a move that suggests they might be willing to sell Gyokeres. They paid Coventry City to reduce the sell-on clause in Gyokeres’ contract.
According to a report from Portuguese newspaper Bola Na Rede, Sporting paid Coventry City €1m (£843k) and reduced the sell-on clause by five percent. Initially, Coventry City was entitled to 15 percent of any profit Sporting made if they sold Gyokeres. This means that Sporting CP now keeps a larger portion of any future transfer fee, potentially making negotiations with clubs like Arsenal easier.
Coventry City has already made over £2.5m in additional payments from the initial €20m (£17.5m) fee they received for Gyokeres in 2023. With this new arrangement, Sporting CP might lower their asking price, benefiting interested clubs like Arsenal.
Ahead of Arsenal’s pre-season friendly against Liverpool, Arteta spoke about his transfer plans. He mentioned that they are waiting to see how the transfer market moves and that they had meetings earlier in the year to identify areas for improvement. Arteta expressed satisfaction with the current team but remains open to strengthening it further if possible.
When asked if Arsenal plans to make a big-money signing like they did with Declan Rice last season, Arteta said that they do not expect to spend as much this time around.
