Garner, who left for Everton in September 2022 in a deal worth around £15 million, spoke to *BBC Sport* in 2023 about his departure. He explained that a direct conversation with Ten Hag was pivotal in his decision to seek opportunities elsewhere.

“Ten Hag is very approachable but also very strict. He doesn’t tolerate anyone breaking the rules. He’s straightforward and holds people accountable if they do something wrong,” Garner said.

“My conversation with him was straightforward. I asked him directly if I would be part of the squad or if he saw a role for me. I didn’t get the response I was hoping for, so I decided to leave.”

Garner, who had just enjoyed a standout season, wanted to continue playing regularly rather than risk being on the bench. “I had a great season before that, probably the best I could have had, and I didn’t want to stagnate by sitting on the bench every week. Nothing is guaranteed in football, but when the club starts signing three or four midfielders, you start to understand where you stand.”

During his time at United, Garner made only seven appearances and spent significant time on loan at Watford and Nottingham Forest, where he found more playing time.
