Erik ten Hag, Manchester United’s manager, defended his choice to place Marcus Rashford on the bench during the team’s 0-0 draw with Crystal Palace, calling the commentators’ reactions “ludicrous.”
Alejandro Garnacho, Joshua Zirkzee, and Amad Diallo were chosen over Rashford, despite his recent performance, where he scored three goals in the last two matches.
The Red Devils struggled to convert their possession into goals, and their missed opportunities at Selhurst Park allowed the home team to earn a draw without performing at their best.
Jamie Redknapp from Sky Sports questioned Ten Hag’s decision to bench Rashford, implying there could be other underlying reasons.
Redknapp remarked, “It feels like something has gone wrong. I’m not aware of the specifics, but you don’t bench a player who scored twice against Southampton in midweek.”
He continued, “I wouldn’t say he’s fully back, but he seems reminiscent of the Rashford from two years ago. I’m not sure what’s frustrating the manager, but it feels like something happened this week. It’s unusual for a manager to sideline players based on their lifestyle.”
While Ten Hag has previously made similar choices, Sir Alex Ferguson would not have taken that route, as it doesn’t always benefit the players.
In response to Redknapp and others who backed the criticism, Ten Hag voiced his frustration, saying, “The speculation from such commentators is ridiculous.”
Erik ten Hag’s decision to bench Marcus Rashford during Manchester United’s 0-0 draw with Crystal Palace drew sharp reactions, especially from Jamie Redknapp, who suggested there may be underlying issues influencing the choice. Despite Rashford’s recent good form—having scored three goals in his last two games—Ten Hag opted to start Alejandro Garnacho, Joshua Zirkzee, and Amad Diallo instead. The lack of finishing touch from United ultimately resulted in a frustrating draw, with Crystal Palace securing a point without playing their best.
Redknapp’s critique centered on the puzzling nature of sidelining a player in form, raising suspicions about potential off-field issues. He implied that something unusual might have occurred, given Rashford’s contributions and momentum. However, Ten Hag firmly dismissed the speculation, labeling it as “ludicrous” and standing by his tactical decisions.
Though Ten Hag has been known to make bold choices regarding team selection, Redknapp compared this approach to Sir Alex Ferguson, suggesting that Ferguson may not have taken the same path, especially if it risked impacting a key player’s confidence. Nonetheless, Ten Hag maintained that his decisions are based on what he feels is best for the team, rather than responding to outside opinions.
