Former Chelsea captain John Terry has raised concerns about the club’s defensive situation, particularly criticizing the decision not to secure an adequate replacement for Thiago Silva.

During an interview with *FOOTBALLWAVE*, Terry, now a football pundit, expressed his disappointment in Chelsea’s lack of a commanding presence in their backline, following Silva’s departure.

Silva, who joined Chelsea in 2020, quickly became a key figure in their defense and played a significant role in the club’s Champions League triumph during the 2020-21 season.
Even as Chelsea faced struggles after that success, Silva maintained his high level of performance.

However, now that the 39-year-old veteran is no longer with the team, Terry believes the current defensive lineup lacks the leadership needed to guide the team forward.
Terry’s primary concern is that Chelsea’s defense is missing an elite center-back who can organize the backline with authority.

He said, “If you want to be a successful club, if you want to challenge and compete in the Premier League, you must have a good defense.

The Chelsea defense isn’t good. I can’t understand how the club can allow Thiago Silva to go and not think that they need to bring in someone that can run the backline with authority.”

He went on to say that young players like Levi Colwill and Wesley Fofana, while promising, cannot be expected to manage the defense on their own without guidance from a more experienced player.

Terry emphasized that a strong defense is essential for any club with title ambitions.

He pointed to Chelsea’s recent defensive lapses as evidence of their vulnerability, referencing their 1-1 draw against Crystal Palace.

According to Terry, if Chelsea fails to address their defensive weaknesses, they risk conceding unnecessary goals and dropping points in crucial matches.

“If you don’t have good defenders, if you don’t have a strong base, you can score goals, but you’re going to concede goals, and you will drop points.

That’s what happened against Crystal Palace,” Terry said.

The former captain also discussed the team’s inconsistency, particularly under new manager Enzo Maresca.

Chelsea’s start to the 2024-25 Premier League season has been mixed, with a 2-0 defeat to Manchester City followed by a dominant 6-2 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers.

However, the club failed to build on that momentum and had to settle for a draw against Crystal Palace at Stamford Bridge, much to Terry’s frustration.

Terry blamed the club’s struggles on the constant changes to the squad over the past two years, which he believes have disrupted team chemistry.

He remarked that a few years ago, a home match against Crystal Palace would have been considered an easy three points for Chelsea.
Now, however, the team’s inconsistency and lack of confidence make such results uncertain.

“They don’t have that confidence anymore,” he stated.

“They are so inconsistent, but that is what you get when you make so many changes and are missing top, top players in key positions.”

As Chelsea prepares to face Bournemouth, the pressure is on to resolve their defensive issues and deliver a stronger performance.

Terry’s comments highlight the ongoing concerns regarding the lack of leadership in defense, and whether the team can regain its stability and consistency will be closely watched in the coming matches.
John Terry, former Chelsea captain, has voiced concerns about the club’s defensive situation following the departure of Thiago Silva. Speaking in an interview with *FOOTBALLWAVE*, Terry criticized Chelsea’s failure to secure an adequate replacement for Silva, who was a crucial figure in their 2020-21 Champions League victory.

Terry emphasized that a strong defense is vital for success in the Premier League, expressing doubts about the current defensive lineup, especially with younger players like Levi Colwill and Wesley Fofana lacking a guiding figure. He pointed to Chelsea’s inconsistency this season under new manager Enzo Maresca, highlighting defensive lapses in their recent 1-1 draw against Crystal Palace.

Terry warned that without addressing their defensive weaknesses, Chelsea risks conceding more goals and dropping crucial points in key matches. His concerns come as the club prepares for a match against Bournemouth amidst growing pressure to stabilize the defense.
