Frank Lampard recently shared insights into Mauricio Pochettino’s first season challenges at Chelsea, expressing little surprise at the struggles faced.
Taking the reins temporarily after Graham Potter’s exit, Lampard managed Chelsea until Pochettino’s arrival in the summer. The team’s current ninth position in the Premier League standings, coupled with their difficulty in securing European qualification, marks a departure from their usual standards.
Despite their league position, Chelsea still has a shot at European qualification through the FA Cup. Lampard, speaking to the BBC ahead of their FA Cup semifinal against Manchester City, highlighted the gradual nature of progress and the team’s composition as factors behind their struggles.
He stressed the importance of incremental improvements, noting a recent streak of eight games without a loss or defeat as confidence boosters. However, Lampard cautioned against inconsistencies that may arise, particularly when the team fails to control the game.
Lampard singled out Cole Palmer’s commendable performance for Chelsea and emphasized the significance of momentum, referencing their recent 6-0 victory. Yet, he acknowledged the looming challenge in their upcoming match.
Chelsea grabbed headlines with their recent six-goal thrashing of Everton, but a penalty dispute involving Nicolas Jackson, Noni Madueke, and Palmer also drew attention. Eventually, Palmer stepped up and netted his fourth goal of the match.
Despite Chelsea’s recent good form, Lampard recognized the expected challenges for any new manager, citing his own experience transitioning from player to manager. Having been an iconic midfielder for Chelsea from 2001 to 2014, Lampard’s managerial stint from 2019 to 2021 followed his interim role at the end of the previous campaign.
The revolving door of managers at Chelsea in recent years has been a topic of discussion, with Lampard foreseeing the challenges any new manager would face due to the inevitable squad overhaul.
