Frank Lampard recently shared insights on Mauricio Pochettino’s tough start at Chelsea, expressing that it didn’t catch him off guard.

When Graham Potter left at the end of the last season, Lampard temporarily took the reins until Pochettino’s arrival in the summer.

Currently sitting in ninth place in the Premier League, Chelsea’s struggle to secure a spot in European competitions through the league has disappointed many fans who are accustomed to higher standards from the team.

However, despite their league position, Chelsea could still clinch a spot in Europe by winning the FA Cup.

In an interview with the BBC before their FA Cup semi-final against Manchester City, Lampard shared his thoughts on Chelsea’s season.

“I believe progress happens gradually,” Lampard said. “This season has been about small steps forward. Considering the team’s makeup, I’m not surprised.”

“A string of eight games without a loss or defeat boosts morale,” he added. “But there may still be inconsistencies when they can’t control the game.”

Lampard praised the performance of Cole Palmer, who has been impressive for Chelsea, and stressed the importance of momentum, especially after their recent 6-0 victory. However, he acknowledged the challenges ahead, particularly in the upcoming match.

Chelsea grabbed headlines with their recent 6-0 win over Everton, but a penalty dispute involving Nicolas Jackson, Noni Madueke, and Palmer drew attention. Ultimately, Palmer stepped up and scored his fourth goal of the match.

Despite their recent good form, Lampard recognized the challenges any new manager would face at Chelsea, a club known for its high expectations and managerial turnover.

“As someone who knows Chelsea inside out, I anticipated the challenges a new manager would encounter,” Lampard shared with the BBC. “A significant squad overhaul was always on the horizon.”

Lampard, a Chelsea midfield icon from 2001 to 2014, had his own managerial stint at Stamford Bridge from 2019 to 2021, following his interim role at the end of the previous campaign.
