Arsenal is reportedly looking to enhance its squad by reigniting interest in a £55 million midfielder, aiming to address current weaknesses in defense and goal-scoring challenges.

The absence of Granit Xhaka has been felt in midfield, and Mikel Arteta is keen on Spain international Martin Zubimendi, who has also caught Barcelona’s attention due to impressive performances in La Liga with Sociedad.

Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo suggests that Arsenal, among other clubs, is willing to meet Zubimendi’s €60m release clause, a potential solution to bolster their squad. However, a key hurdle could be Zubimendi’s indecision about leaving Sociedad, especially with a crucial Champions League last-16 tie against Paris Saint-Germain on the horizon.

Zubimendi’s outstanding form over the past year has earned him a spot in the Spain national team, earning his fourth cap in November. Despite Arsenal’s current needs in midfield, it remains uncertain whether the player will opt to leave Sociedad.

As Arsenal has yet to make a move in the January transfer market, the potential pursuit of a defensive midfielder raises eyebrows, given the anticipated priority for attacking reinforcements at the Emirates in the second half of the season. This strategic approach aims to close the gap on Premier League leaders Liverpool.
