When choosing the best player from last season, Arsenal has many good options to consider.
Martin Odegaard improved as a captain, Bukayo Saka reached new heights with his performance, and Declan Rice strengthened the midfield significantly.
However, Gabriel Martinelli did not show much improvement; in fact, he might have regressed. According to recent news, Martinelli might soon face competition for his spot in the starting lineup.
A report from Spain indicates that Arsenal is very interested in signing Dani Olmo, a talented player from RB Leipzig and a Spanish international. Arsenal is currently in the lead to get him.
Bayern Munich and Barcelona are also interested in Olmo. Due to a clause in his contract, he would cost around €60 million (about £51 million) to sign.
This transfer would be expensive, but Olmo’s performances in recent seasons suggest he is worth it. His presence would also motivate Martinelli to improve his game.
Comparing Olmo to Martinelli
Olmo is a versatile player who can perform well on either wing or in attacking midfield. With Saka and Odegaard being key players for Arsenal, Olmo would likely play on the left side.
This means his main competitor would be Martinelli, since Leandro Trossard, who is turning 30 this year, is unlikely to be the first-choice left-winger in the long run.
Looking at their stats, both Olmo and Martinelli scored eight goals and had five assists last season. However, Olmo achieved these numbers in just 25 games, whereas Martinelli took 44 games to do the same.
Olmo averaged a goal or assist every 1.9 games, while Martinelli averaged one every 3.3 games, making Olmo’s performance more efficient.
When considering their overall statistics, Olmo seems to have an edge over Martinelli.
