What MACANTHONY SAID?
EFL chairman MacAnthony, who oversees League One team Peterborough, cannot see significant action being taken; Juve had a trophy taken from them during the Calciopoli scam in 2006. He told TalkSPORT: “I’m not sure what the policy is for such charges. I have no idea the penalty. What the historical precedence is is unknown to me. Two points per charge sounds right. The media will undoubtedly use headlines like “relegation,” “banned,” “league titles from the past given back,” all of which are ridiculous in my view. Although I know in Italy that happened, I don’t think you can change the past; I find it objectionable.

“Everyone in football seeks manipulation; let me speak for the EFL; Man City has not done this. With all the pay limitations, restrictions, everything else, everyone tries to work around the system to sign players and make them as powerful as feasible. Although I’m not stating anybody is breaching any laws or rules, the Premier League is not exempt from rule-bending activity. And I just say: let it play out, let’s see what happens at the very end. Man City, who they are and what they have done over the past ten years, seem like easy targets and wonderful media coverage.

With MacAnthony adding on that topic – with the Blues’ Catalan coach into the final year of his contract – questions are also being asked of Pep Guardiola’s future at City. “I can’t speak for Pep but I think he’s done six years, maybe more, which is probably a long old period for him. He may be like Jurgen [Klopp] and, following another year of winning X amount consecutively, decide “you know what? I should have a year off.

“This game is unrelenting and makes sense what Jurgen Klopp done. Being an owner, a manager, and caught in that rat race for four years since Covid is relentless enough. You speak about health, mental health, physically, psychologically, these folks are run-through the mill. I can only image what Pep’s body and mind are experiencing, so perhaps he does need some time off. If I were Man City, I would be like “Pep, take a year off, we’ll place your second number two in charge for a year and you can come back after a good break…”I would have done that with Jurgen.

NEXT NOTES
City has rewrote the history books by consecutively collecting four Premier League championships. Pre-season friendlies in the United States against AC Milan, Barcelona, and Chelsea will be taken in before they commence the defence of that championship at Stamford Bridge on August 18.
Darragh MacAnthony, the chairman of Peterborough United, was speaking about Manchester City’s alleged financial fair play breaches. City faces 115 allegations related to Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR), which have raised questions about potential punishments. However, MacAnthony expressed skepticism about any significant penalties, citing how Juventus lost a trophy after the Calciopoli scandal in 2006 but dismissing the idea of past titles being stripped from City.

MacAnthony suggested that media speculation about relegation or bans was exaggerated, pointing out that football clubs often find ways to work around financial rules to remain competitive. While he acknowledged the charges, he emphasized that this situation should be allowed to play out before jumping to conclusions. He also touched on how such scandals create headlines but felt it unlikely that City would face severe consequences.

Regarding Pep Guardiola’s future at Manchester City, MacAnthony noted that Guardiola might need a break after several intense years of success, comparing his situation to that of Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool. He speculated that Guardiola, who is in the final year of his contract, could take a year off after another successful season. MacAnthony suggested that it would make sense for City to allow Guardiola to rest and then return recharged.

Finally, MacAnthony highlighted Manchester City’s dominance in recent years, having won four consecutive Premier League titles. The team’s pre-season preparations include friendlies against major clubs before they begin defending their title on August 18 at Stamford Bridge.
