In the recent FA Cup third-round match between Arsenal and Liverpool, former footballer Martin Keown expressed his concern about Kai Havertz’s missed opportunities and lack of ruthlessness.
Despite Arsenal having several chances to score in the first half, Havertz failed to find the back of the net.
Keown, speaking on BBC, questioned why Havertz, who played in various positions during the game, wasn’t more aggressive in trying to score.
He remarked, “They’ve played Havertz in midfield, they’ve played him up front. Why’s he not coming on to that and hitting it?”
On the other hand, Danny Murphy took a different perspective, praising Havertz for his effective work off the ball and highlighting the success of Arsenal’s pressing game.
Murphy noted, “It’s working really well, Havertz leading that press. Rice has been superb in the middle of the pitch. You can see the intent. They kept taking their time.”
Despite the missed opportunities, Keown acknowledged Arsenal’s overall performance, describing their approach play as “magnificent.”
He emphasized the need for a more aggressive attitude, saying, “You’ve got to really go for it. The approach play has been magnificent. This was four opportunities all at once.”
Kai Havertz, who joined Arsenal from Chelsea for £65 million, took some time to adapt to his new team. However, there have been positive signs lately, with Havertz scoring four goals in his last nine games leading up to the Liverpool fixture.
Normally deployed as an attacking midfielder, he started up front against Liverpool due to the absence of the injured Gabriel Jesus.
