In recent years, Arsenal’s captain, Martin Odegaard, has become recognized as one of the top midfielders globally. Under Mikel Arteta’s leadership, he’s excelled as a right-sided number eight, consistently scoring goals. Impressively, since the 2022/23 season kicked off, only five players have netted more non-penalty goals in the Premier League than Odegaard.

What makes Odegaard’s achievement even more remarkable is that those five players are forwards, while he operates mainly as a midfielder. Over the past year, he’s scored an impressive 16 non-penalty goals in the league, with his latest goal secured during Arsenal’s 3-1 win against Manchester United.

To put things in perspective, Bruno Fernandes, a key player for Manchester United, has scored six non-penalty goals in the same timeframe. This significant gap of ten goals between Fernandes and Odegaard raises questions, especially considering recent remarks from Kevin De Bruyne, who ranked Fernandes first, Odegaard second, and James Maddison of Tottenham third in terms of creativity.

De Bruyne praised Fernandes as a “creative machine” but highlighted Odegaard’s controlled creativity. He also noted Maddison’s creativity but suggested he needed to prove himself more in a top-tier team. De Bruyne’s rationale for placing Fernandes ahead of Odegaard was based on Fernandes’ consistency over a longer period.

Following Arsenal’s victory over Manchester United, former Tottenham Hotspur player Garth Crooks included Odegaard in his Premier League team of the week. Crooks praised Odegaard’s quick equalizer after Manchester United took the lead, emphasizing the skill and precision required for the goal, which ultimately proved pivotal for Arsenal’s success.
