Arsenal’s manager, Mikel Arteta, has come to the defense of Gabriel Martinelli amid his recent struggle in performance. Arteta, talking to football.london, praised the 22-year-old for being among the best globally in working hard on goal practice and maintaining determination.
According to Arteta, Martinelli isn’t grappling with confidence issues currently and remains a significant threat for Arsenal.
Although Martinelli had a remarkable season last year, contributing 15 goals and five assists in 36 league games, his form has dipped this season, scoring only twice and providing two assists in 16 matches.
In the recent game against Liverpool, Martinelli missed a notable opportunity and faced challenges from players like Trent Alexander-Arnold and Ibrahima Konate, often appearing disheartened.
Arteta, however, downplayed concerns during a pre-match press conference, emphasizing that Martinelli is genuinely putting in effort and poses a substantial threat to the opposition.
Arteta explained that the small details, such as decision-making, scoring, or missing chances, can impact a player’s performance.
He highlighted Martinelli’s persistent efforts and threat both with and without the ball. When asked about improving decision-making, Arteta suggested Martinelli needs to stay open, work hard, practice game situations, and have the courage to repeat them, praising Martinelli as one of the world’s best in this aspect.
Arteta acknowledged that many top players have experienced a decline in form this season and expressed hope that Martinelli can overcome this phase and bounce back.
Arsenal has the opportunity to reclaim the top spot in the Premier League if they secure three points against West Ham in their upcoming match at the Emirates Stadium.
