Holger Rune Vows to Return ‘As a Beast’ in Determined Comeback from Achilles Injury

Danish tennis star Holger Rune has issued a bold declaration about his recovery from a serious Achilles injury, stating that his ultimate goal is to return to the ATP Tour stronger and more dominant than ever.

In a recent interview featured on ATPTour.com and echoed across various platforms including a podcast appearance with Andy Roddick, the 22-year-old opened up about his ongoing rehabilitation following a ruptured Achilles tendon sustained during the Stockholm Open semifinals in October 2025. The injury forced him to retire mid-match against Ugo Humbert in tears and undergo surgery shortly afterward, sidelining him indefinitely and ending his season prematurely.

Rune, who has been sharing steady progress updates on social media, described the setback as unexpected but expressed optimism about his recovery process. He credited his surgical team, physiotherapists, and support network for smooth progress without major setbacks so far. The Dane has transitioned from initial rest to gym work, gradual court sessions, and now focused strength training to balance both legs before advancing to higher-impact activities like running and jumping.

Amid the challenges of a prolonged absence—now stretching over several months—Rune remains fiercely motivated. He emphasized a cautious yet ambitious approach to his return.

“When I’m coming back, I’m going to be a beast because there’s no reason for me to come back and not feel ready,” Rune said. “I’m a very eager person. I’m very hungry to come back. At the same time, I want to come back as the best version of myself—a version that doesn’t break, a version that’s unstoppable, a version that can beat everyone, not only one week, but all tournaments.”

He drew inspiration from advice to avoid rushing back, even when feeling good, and instead take the time needed to rebuild properly. Rune referenced the legendary comeback of Roger Federer in 2017 after a six-month injury layoff, expressing his aim to emulate that level of dominance.

“My goal is not just to come back, but to come back like a beast and beat everybody,” he asserted in one account of his comments.

The former World No. 4 has used the forced break for reflection, noting lessons in patience, mental resilience, and looking at the bigger picture in his career. He has praised the support from family, friends, and his team, which has helped maintain a positive mindset during the grind of rehabilitation.

As of early February 2026, Rune continues structured rehab, including sessions at facilities like Aspetar, with no firm return date announced. Recent social media posts show him testing leg strength and gradually building toward full tennis activities, signaling steady advancement.

The young Dane’s fiery determination and clear vision for a powerful resurgence have sparked excitement among fans, who are eager to see the aggressive baseliner back on court. Rune’s comments underscore a player intent on transforming adversity into fuel for future success, positioning his comeback as one to watch in the tennis world.
