MAN UTD MAKE FINAL DECISION ON RALF RANGNICK’S ONLY SIGNING AT THE CLUB
Ralf Rangnick’s only signing as Manchester United boss has signed a new contract with the club, which keeps him at Old Trafford until at least 2027.
Rangnick took charge of 29 games as United’s interim boss, finishing with an uninspiring 38% win ratio. The 65-year-old was initially set to stay on as a technical consultant at United before taking the Austria national team job with his side catching the eye at Euro 2024.
The fact it was rather shocking to see Austria head out of the competition in the round of 16, demonstrates just how well they had played under Rangnick during the group stages.
During his time at United, the German spoke honestly about the need for “open heart surgery” in the United squad but was only able to bring in one new recruit.
In March 2022 Tobias Collyer joined United on a three-and-a-half-year deal from Brighton, with the defensive midfielder being placed in the u-21 setup on arrival.
Collyer is yet to make his competitive United debut but has been on the bench for seven Premier League games, including each of the last four fixtures of the season.
The England youth international has had a run out with the seniors during last year’s pre-season tour in the US.
Collyer has now put pen to paper on a brand new deal at Old Trafford, with the club releasing the following statement following the announcement: “Manchester United midfielder Toby Collyer has signed a new contract with the club, running until 2027 with the option to extend to 2028.
“The new deal is reward for his efforts since joining the club and everybody would like to congratulate Toby and wish him well for what lies ahead in 2024/25.”
The 20-year-old could be one to look out for next season as he makes his step up through the ranks, with Erik ten Hag already demonstrating he is willing to give youth a chance with the likes of Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo.
Erik ten Hag has reportedly made a final decision over the future of Ralf Rangnick’s only signing at Manchester United.
United won the FA Cup last Sunday, defeating Manchester City 2-1 in the final.
That final played out under the backdrop of intense speculation over the Dutchman’s future, which many fans believed to be unfair in the build-up to the club’s biggest game of the season.
Winning the final only served to increase external support for Ten Hag, with minority owners Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS now undergoing a review into the season to determine the manager’s future.
One factor that is very much in his favour is the Dutchman’s development of youth players – traditionally a key goal for United bosses – with Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo both developing into key first team players under Ten Hag’s stewardship.
He has had to make tough decisions on other young players, though, allowing Alvaro Fernandez, Matej Kovar and Zidane Iqbal to leave the club. United are believed to have buy-back options on all three players.
But according to The Telegraph, one player Ten Hag will not allow to leave the club is midfielder Toby Collyer.
It is claimed that Collyer is ‘regarded as a player with first-team potential’, and could receive a full call-up next season after impressing academy bosses.
The 20-year-old was the only player signed by United under the interim management of Rangnick, who was in charge of the club between November 2021 and May 2022.It seems Toby Collyer, Ralf Rangnick’s sole signing during his interim tenure at Manchester United, has extended his contract with the club until at least 2027, with an option for further extension to 2028. Despite Rangnick’s brief stint and his call for significant squad changes, Collyer has been patiently waiting for his debut, having been on the bench several times in the Premier League. Erik ten Hag, the current manager, has reportedly decided to retain Collyer due to his perceived potential, aligning with his emphasis on youth development, as seen with players like Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo.
