Manchester United made an incredible piece of FA Cup final history in the first half of their Wembley clash against Manchester City.
United went into the final at Wembley as the outsiders to lift the FA Cup against a City side that won their fourth consecutive Premier League title last weekend.
But they raced into a 2-0 lead at half-time, with academy graduates Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo both getting on the scoresheet for Erik ten Hag’s side. While Mainoo’s goal arrived following a superb team move, Garnacho profited from a rare defensive mix-up from City to put his side ahead. After a long ball over the top of the defence, Josko Gvardiol attempted to head the ball back to onrushing goalkeeper Stefan Ortega. But he only succeeded in heading the ball over the German shot-stopper, with Garnacho racing past to pick up the pieces and slot into an empty net.In the process, the Argentinian became the first teenager to score for Manchester United in an FA Cup since Cristiano Ronaldo in 2004.
The United legend netted in a 4-0 win over Millwall in the 2004 final, with that record standing for an astonishing 20 years.
However, Garnacho became the new holder of that particular piece of history – for around 15 minutes, before Mainoo scored his goal.
Mainoo’s goal, meanwhile, meant United created a unique piece of men’s FA Cup final history.United are the first team to have two teenagers score in an FA Cup final, with Mainoo the youngest goalscorer since West Ham’s John Sissons in 1964.This is a breaking news story from the team at SPORTbible and will be updated in due course.
