Conor Gallagher recently shared his mixed emotions about the departure of Chelsea’s manager Mauricio Pochettino. Pochettino took charge of Chelsea before the 2023-24 season and led the team to a sixth-place finish in the league. However, this performance did not meet the expectations of Chelsea’s owner, Todd Boehly, leading to Pochettino leaving the club by mutual agreement shortly after the season ended.

Gallagher, who was a key player under Pochettino, often captaining the team, felt a personal connection to the manager. His consistent performance, including five goals and seven assists, helped secure his place in England’s Euro 2024 squad, missing only one league game.

Enzo Maresca, previously the manager of Leicester City, has been appointed as Pochettino’s replacement at Chelsea. While Gallagher expressed his excitement about working with the new manager, he did not hide his sadness about Pochettino’s departure.

“I was really sorry to see him go because he did so much for me,” Gallagher admitted. “I’m sad for him and the coaching staff, but also excited about the new manager coming in.”

Reflecting on his season under Pochettino, Gallagher credited the manager for his development. “I believe I have progressed a lot this season thanks to Pochettino. He gave me trust and responsibility, which put me in a better position to contribute to the team and to England in the upcoming tournament.”

Gallagher emphasized the importance of a manager’s belief in a player. “When a manager shows you trust and gives you a bit of love, you perform better. It boosts your confidence, and that’s what Pochettino did for me. I’m grateful for the chance he gave me to prove myself at Chelsea, and I hope to continue improving.”

After his departure, Pochettino returned to Stamford Bridge to captain a World XI in the Soccer Aid charity match for UNICEF. Reflecting on his time at Chelsea, he expressed his gratitude on Instagram.

“We are thankful for the opportunity to compete in the Premier League with Chelsea and for the support from the owners, sporting directors, players, staff, and fans,” Pochettino wrote. “We worked hard to make you proud of this football club. I am pleased with the progress the squad made and the effort everyone put in. They deserve a lot of praise for their performance on the field.”

Pochettino acknowledged the ups and downs of the season but remained optimistic about the team’s future. “We always believed in this squad and their potential to reach a consistent level. This season’s experiences have made the players stronger. It was a pleasure to work with them, and I cherish the close relationships we built over the past year.”

Gallagher and Pochettino’s comments highlight the emotional and professional impact of managerial changes in football, emphasizing both the challenges and opportunities that come with new leadership.
