Ian Wright Warns of Potential Bias Against England’s Black Players at Euro 2024

Football legend Ian Wright has raised concerns about the treatment of Bukayo Saka and other black players on England’s national team, fearing they might be unfairly blamed if the team doesn’t perform well at Euro 2024.

England suffered a surprising 1-0 defeat to Iceland at Wembley Stadium in their final warm-up match before the summer tournament. The loss was unexpected and highlighted issues within the team, which appeared unfit and lacked inspiration against a lower-ranked opponent.

The team faced boos from the crowd both at half-time and after the match, with several players receiving heavy criticism. Although Bukayo Saka only played for the final 25 minutes after coming on as a substitute, he became the focus of several newspaper back pages. This has led to accusations of racial bias and gaslighting from fans and observers, who recall the racist abuse Saka, Marcus Rashford, and Jadon Sancho endured after missing penalties in the Euro 2020 final against Italy.

Ian Wright took to Twitter to express his frustration and urged fans to support the players. He emphasized the importance of backing these young athletes and not allowing them to be unfairly targeted.

“Now more than ever, let’s get behind and support these young people,” Wright tweeted. “We can all see what’s happening and who’s being set up to be the face of defeat. We are going to be gaslit with explanations and justifications, but those deciding who goes on the back pages know what they’re doing. Let’s keep our energy focused on giving these players pure love and support throughout the tournament.”

Wright’s concerns were echoed by Formula 1 legend Sir Lewis Hamilton, who also addressed the issue on social media. He criticized the English media for their treatment of black players and called for accountability.

“We need to hold the English media accountable for systematically vilifying black players,” Hamilton shared on his Instagram story. “The constant scapegoating of black players needs to stop. This endemic racial discrimination has no place in football, yet countless news outlets suggest otherwise.”

Bukayo Saka, at 22, is expected to be a crucial player for England in Euro 2024. He is coming off an outstanding season with Arsenal, where he scored 20 goals and provided 14 assists. Despite the challenges and potential bias he might face, Saka remains a beacon of hope and talent for the national team.

As the tournament approaches, it is vital for fans and the media to support all players fairly and to recognize and address any underlying biases that could affect the team’s morale and performance.
