According to football journalist Fabrizio Romano, Manchester United have reached an agreement on personal terms with Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) midfielder Manuel Ugarte, bringing them closer to a potential transfer.
This summer, Manchester United have already signed two players, Joshua Zirkzee and Leny Yoro. Now, they are focusing on acquiring Ugarte from PSG.
Romano reports that Manchester United have agreed on personal terms with Ugarte, a South American midfielder. The two clubs are now negotiating the transfer fee.
Another update from the French newspaper L’Equipe, cited by SportWitness, states that PSG do not want to sell Ugarte at a loss, as they bought him from Sporting for £50 million. Therefore, they are asking for around £59 million for him. Manchester United, however, are not willing to spend that much and might suggest a loan deal with an option to buy later.
In the 2023/24 Premier League season, Manchester United finished 8th. They managed to save their season somewhat by winning the FA Cup, but the club’s management knows the team needs to improve to compete at the highest level again.
Manchester United have already strengthened their team by signing a new centre-forward and a central defender. Their next focus could be on the defensive midfield position. Last season, their midfield options were Casemiro, Scott McTominay, and Sofyan Amrabat (on loan), but none of them performed consistently well.
Ugarte would be an upgrade in this position. He is skilled with the ball and works very hard when the team does not have possession. Like Casemiro, he is not afraid to make tackles and has a higher success rate. At just 23 years old, he has the potential to grow and improve at Manchester United.
However, it seems unlikely that Manchester United will pay £59 million for the Uruguayan player, especially after their significant spending on Zirkzee and Yoro. A loan deal might be a good option to see if Ugarte can succeed in the Premier League. On the other hand, PSG may prefer a deal that includes an obligation to buy, as they are planning to sign his replacement, Joao Neves from Benfica.
