Tuchel, who agreed to leave Bayern Munich in February, is viewed by Old Trafford executives as a temporary solution rather than someone who can lead the long-term project required.
Despite being the first Bayern coach not to clinch the Bundesliga title in a decade, the German led the side to the Champions League semi-finals. He also has previous experience of managing in England, having guided Chelsea to European success before his dismissal in 2022.
The new INEOS leadership at United considers Southgate the top candidate for the job. They believe the England manager is best suited to instigate a cultural shift at Old Trafford, similar to what he achieved with the national team when he took over eight years ago.
Southgate is currently solely focused on leading England to their first major silverware since 1966 at the upcoming European Championships. His dedication is such that he has reportedly decided not to entertain any managerial offers until after Euro 2024 concludes on July 14.
Despite that, there’s a sense of optimism within the United hierarchy that Southgate might be persuaded to take the helm, though it would mean losing crucial pre-season planning time. Other options are therefore still being scoped out.
Brentford manager Frank is said to have “made an impression”, while Pochettino, who recently left Chelsea by mutual agreement, is a long-time target. De Zerbi, who similarly left Brighton at the end of the season, is also being considered.
