VERY SAD Bruno Fernandez news has been announced this morning as Manchester United manager Erik Ten Hag has stripped him off the Captain Batch and the new Captain has been named

Maya Le Tissier has been selected Manchester United’s new captain for the 2024/25 season, succeeding Katie Zelem, who left in the summer.

The centre-back joined the club from Brighton & Hove Albion two years ago, and she has immediately established herself as a reliable component of the squad’s backline.

“It is an honour to be appointed captain of this wonderful football club, and I will wear the armband with great pride to help lead this squad to victory both on and off the pitch,” she added.

Zelem, who won the FA Cup in May but resigned after her contract expired the following month, had been in the job since 2019. The midfielder has now joined Angel City in the NWSL.

Le Tissier had a spectacular couple of seasons, developing a good relationship with Millie Turner and contributing to a WSL record 14 clean sheets in 2022/23 as United finished second.

Outside of club football, Le Tissier gained her first senior England call-up following Euro 2022 and has made four appearances so far. She was on the standby list for the 2023 World Cup and traveled with the squad to Australia, but did not participate. However, the 22-year-old’s international career has been impeded by Lionesses manager Sarina Wiegman’s tendency to regard her as a full-back, where she played for former club Brighton, rather than a centre-back.

Le Tissier was named United’s joint Players’ Player of the Year at the end of the 2023/24 season, alongside Ella Toone, who has been named the new vice-captain. Previously, there was no specified deputy for Zelem, however Hayley Ladd would frequently assume the armband in the skipper’s infrequent absence.

While Le Tissier signed a new contract until 2028, Toone inked a similar agreement in 2022 that will last until the conclusion of next season. The latter is also United’s all-time leading appearance maker and goalscorer, having scored 53 goals in 164 games.Maya Le Tissier has been appointed as the new captain of Manchester United for the 2024/25 season, taking over from Katie Zelem, who left the club in the summer after her contract expired. Le Tissier, who joined Manchester United from Brighton & Hove Albion two years ago, has quickly become a key figure in the team’s defense. She expressed her pride in being named captain and her commitment to leading the squad to success both on and off the field.

Katie Zelem, the previous captain, led the team to an FA Cup victory in May but decided to leave Manchester United afterward, joining Angel City FC in the NWSL. Zelem had been United’s captain since 2019 and played a vital role in the team’s progress.

Le Tissier has had an impressive tenure at Manchester United, forming a strong partnership with Millie Turner and helping the team achieve a Women’s Super League (WSL) record of 14 clean sheets during the 2022/23 season. Her performances have been consistently strong, earning her a joint Players’ Player of the Year award for the 2023/24 season alongside Ella Toone. Toone, who has now been named vice-captain, is United’s all-time leading appearance maker and goalscorer, with 53 goals in 164 appearances. She signed a contract in 2022 that runs until the end of the next season.

Internationally, Le Tissier has been recognized for her talents but has faced challenges in securing a consistent role with the England national team under manager Sarina Wiegman, who has primarily considered her for the full-back position. Despite being on standby for the 2023 World Cup squad and traveling with the team to Australia, she did not feature in the tournament. However, her club form has been exceptional, and her leadership qualities have now been rewarded with the captaincy at Manchester United.

Le Tissier’s new contract with Manchester United extends until 2028, indicating the club’s long-term faith in her abilities both as a defender and as a leader.
