Viktor Hovland Set to Kick Off 2026 Season at Hero Dubai Desert Classic

Norwegian golf star Viktor Hovland has confirmed his participation in the Hero Dubai Desert Classic, marking his first tournament appearance of the 2026 season. The event, scheduled for January 22-25 at Emirates Golf Club in Dubai, will see the 28-year-old return to a venue where he has enjoyed past success.

Hovland, a former champion at the Dubai Desert Classic in 2022 when he claimed the Dallah Trophy, expressed enthusiasm about starting his year there once again. The tournament holds special significance for the World No. 13-ranked player, who has described the Majlis Course as an ideal early-season test with its challenging layout, favorable weather, and strong field.

This commitment comes on the heels of a resilient 2025 campaign for Hovland. After contributing to Europe’s Ryder Cup victory at Bethpage Black—despite a neck injury that sidelined him for the final singles matches—he rebounded with a victory at the Valspar Championship on the PGA Tour, ending a lengthy winless streak. That triumph not only marked his seventh PGA Tour title but also solidified his status among the game’s elite ball-strikers.

The Hero Dubai Desert Classic serves as the opening Rolex Series event on the DP World Tour’s 2026 Race to Dubai, attracting a stacked field. Hovland will reunite with several Ryder Cup teammates, including defending champion Tyrrell Hatton, reigning Masters winner Rory McIlroy, and FedEx Cup champion Tommy Fleetwood. Adding further intrigue is the presence of two-time major winner Dustin Johnson, making his debut at the event.

For Hovland, who maintains dual membership on the PGA Tour and DP World Tour, the Dubai stop aligns with his strategy of blending high-profile events across both circuits. His strong affinity for the tournament is evident: “Winning here in 2022 was really cool, and it’s always a great place to start the year. The tournament is one of the highlights of the season—great golf course, great weather, and I’m looking forward to competing for the trophy again.”

While the PGA Tour’s traditional season-opener, The Sentry, will not be held in 2026 due to logistical issues at Kapalua, Hovland’s choice to begin in Dubai underscores his commitment to the DP World Tour early in the calendar year. Fans can anticipate the Norwegian bringing his trademark precision and improved form to the desert, as he aims to build momentum toward the majors and another potential FedEx Cup run.

Hovland’s early 2026 schedule highlights his balanced approach to professional golf, prioritizing venues where he has thrived while chasing continued success on the global stage. The golf world will be watching closely as one of its most talented players tees off in what promises to be an exciting start to the new year.
