One of Barcelona’s rising stars, Gavi, might surprise everyone by joining Arsenal this summer due to an ongoing financial dispute. Recently, a La Liga ruling decided to treat Gavi as an academy player again, sparking concerns about him leaving for free.

This ruling means Gavi could depart without any transfer fees, dealing a significant blow to Barcelona’s efforts to keep the talented teenager. Although he can still play for Barcelona, the club intends to appeal the decision, adding another layer to this complex situation.

The issue revolves around Barcelona exceeding their spending limit, prompting La Liga to reject the registration of Gavi’s new contract. Originally signed in September until 2026, the contract had a clause allowing Gavi to leave for free if not registered as a first-team player by June 30, 2023.

The club faced challenges in upgrading Gavi’s status during the transfer windows due to salary limit rules and financial constraints. Barcelona pursued legal action to force La Liga to register Gavi as a first-team player, eventually succeeding with a temporary injunction in January.

However, La Liga contested the club’s submission, claiming they missed a deadline. The court sided with La Liga, reverting Gavi to academy status unless Barcelona can prove they filed the paperwork on time. Barcelona plans to appeal, but if Gavi becomes a free agent, clubs like Arsenal are closely monitoring the situation, eager to sign the promising talent.
