Graeme Souness has reportedly lost patience with one Liverpool player following another disappointing performance, delivering a furious assessment and insisting that the club must finally make a decision about his future.
The former Liverpool captain is said to be particularly concerned about the player’s repeated mistakes, poor distribution and inability to demonstrate consistent improvement despite receiving regular opportunities in the starting eleven.
And after Liverpool’s painful 3–2 defeat against Fenerbahçe, the criticism has become even louder.
For Souness, the biggest concern is not simply that Liverpool lost another match. It is the manner in which individual mistakes continue to undermine the team’s performances.
The former midfielder reportedly believes that Liverpool cannot continue rewarding disappointing performances with automatic places in the starting eleven.
LIVERPOOL’S DEFEAT IN ISTANBUL RAISES FRESH QUESTIONS
Liverpool travelled to Istanbul expecting a difficult Champions League encounter, but few could have anticipated the way the evening would unfold.
The Reds took the lead in the 25th minute through Trey Nyoni, who scored his first senior goal for the club.
However, Fenerbahçe responded almost immediately when Mason Greenwood’s free-kick took a deflection and beat Alisson Becker in the 29th minute.
Liverpool regained control after the interval and looked to have secured an important victory when Alexander Isak headed home Cody Gakpo’s cross in the 69th minute.
But the defensive problems returned.
Archie Brown equalised in the 73rd minute after Liverpool failed to deal with a dangerous attacking move. Six minutes later, Vedat Muriqi headed home the winner to complete Fenerbahçe’s comeback.
Liverpool had scored twice but still failed to take anything from the match.
For supporters, the most frustrating aspect was watching the team surrender another advantage through defensive mistakes and poor organisation.
SOUNESS REPORTEDLY DELIVERS A BRUTAL VERDICT
According to the circulating claim, Souness was particularly unhappy with one player’s contribution.
The former Liverpool midfielder allegedly questioned how someone producing such disappointing numbers could continue receiving regular opportunities.
His reported comments were explosive:
“There is no doubt he has become a constant liability. Sometimes I wonder how he keeps making the starting eleven every single week.
“Day in, day out, there is absolutely no improvement. In fact, he seems to be getting worse.
“Today was another painful example. Out of 56 passes, he completed only 26 correctly, made just two clearances and committed 10 errors that almost led to goals.
“You cannot keep getting away with performances like that at this level. Enough is enough.
“Come January, Liverpool need to make a decision and show him the exit door. How many more chances does he need?”
If genuine, the comments would represent a serious warning about the player’s position at Anfield.
THE NUMBERS THAT HAVE SPARKED THE CONTROVERSY
The statistics included in the circulating claim paint a concerning picture.
According to the figures being attributed to the performance, the player attempted 56 passes but completed only 26 correctly.
That would represent a completion rate of approximately 46.4 per cent.
The claim also attributes two clearances and ten dangerous errors to the player’s performance.
Those figures would naturally attract attention, particularly for a Liverpool side attempting to rebuild its defensive confidence.
However, the individual statistics have not been independently verified, and they should not be treated as an official match-data record.
Nevertheless, the wider criticism raises an important question about Liverpool’s consistency.
A team competing at the highest level cannot afford repeated mistakes in possession, especially when opponents are capable of turning those mistakes into dangerous counterattacks.
IRAOLA FACES PRESSURE TO MAKE CHANGES
Andoni Iraola now faces an important decision.
Liverpool need more than attacking improvements. They need defensive discipline, concentration and players who can make sensible decisions under pressure.
The defeat against Fenerbahçe demonstrated how quickly a promising performance can collapse when the team loses control of important moments.
Iraola must decide whether to continue trusting the same players or give opportunities to alternatives who might bring greater stability.
Competition for places should be a fundamental part of any successful Liverpool squad.
No player should feel untouchable, regardless of reputation, experience or previous performances.
If someone repeatedly fails to meet the required standard, the manager must be prepared to make difficult decisions.
JANUARY COULD BECOME A TURNING POINT
The January transfer window could provide Liverpool with an opportunity to address weaknesses that have become increasingly difficult to ignore.
If the club decides that certain players are no longer suitable for its long-term plans, departures could create room for fresh additions.
However, Liverpool must be careful not to make emotional decisions based on one disappointing result.
A proper assessment should consider consistency, tactical suitability, fitness, individual responsibilities and the player’s overall contribution throughout the season.
Souness’s reported position is clear: he believes enough is enough and that Liverpool should consider showing the unnamed player the exit door.
Whether the club shares that assessment remains to be seen.
One thing is certain: after surrendering a lead twice and losing 3–2 in Istanbul, Liverpool cannot afford to ignore the problems exposed by that performance.
